Travelling with Coeliac Disease in Japan

Travelling with coeliac disease can be challenging, especially in a country like Japan, where wheat is a common ingredient in many traditional dishes. However, with careful planning and awareness, it is possible to enjoy the rich culinary landscape while adhering to a gluten-free diet.

Understanding Japanese Sweets

Japan offers an abundant range of traditional sweets, known as "wagashi," which are often gluten-free and made from natural ingredients. These sweets are not only delicious but also beautifully crafted, reflecting the seasons and cultural significance. Here are some popular options:

  • Mochi: A rice cake made from glutinous rice, often filled with sweet red bean paste or ice cream. Ensure it is made without any wheat-based flavourings.

  • Dango: Skewered rice dumplings that are typically gluten-free. They can be served with sweet soy sauce or covered in sweet syrup.

  • Daifuku: A type of mochi stuffed with various fillings, such as fruit or sweet bean paste. Check for gluten-containing additives in the fillings.

  • Anmitsu: A dessert made of agar jelly, sweet red beans, and fruits, usually served with syrup. It’s naturally gluten-free.

  • Yatsuhashi: A sweet made from rice flour and often flavoured with cinnamon or matcha. Make sure to choose versions that do not contain wheat flour.

Tips for Travelling Gluten-Free in Japan

  • Learn Key Phrases: Familiarise yourself with phrases like "gluten-free" (グルテンフリー, guruten furii) and "contains wheat" (小麦を含む, komugi o fukumu) to communicate your dietary needs.

  • Research Restaurants: Look for restaurants that specialise in gluten-free options or have a clear understanding of coeliac disease.

  • Pack Snacks: Bring along gluten-free snacks for convenience during travel, especially in rural areas where options may be limited.

  • Use Apps: Utilise translation and food allergy apps to help navigate menus and communicate with staff about your dietary restrictions.

By being proactive and informed, you can savour the unique flavours of Japan’s sweets and enjoy a fulfilling travel experience, all while managing your coeliac condition.
